Studio Letters - Facing Out
February 2025
Songs come from beyond—from the place where the lines between us and them begin to blur and there is only life. In that space, patterns emerge and shift like a kaleidoscope.
They ask: Who am I?
And answer: I am the one facing the world, presenting an image of myself. And I am also the one living inside - quietly, fiercely, honestly.
Facing Out is about that space between. It’s about seeing the world for what it is - its contradictions, its hypocrisies - and choosing to move forward, eyes open.
When I was in secondary school, I fell in love a lot—not in the truly amorous sense, but musically. Patti Smith was a sorceress of sound, of growls, howls, slides, and stomps. She also happened to be (and still is) a brilliant poet, writer, and visual artist. She’s punk, but her rebellion isn’t about breaking guitars or busting faces, it’s about telling the truth, about standing with the story.
I can hear her in this song… in the violin-like vocal slides that accent the chorus. In that same demand for not just looking, but seeing.
I wrote this song because, while the world shifts around us, our inner knowing remains - as a guide, a flame of truth and hope, a stabilizing force. Wherever you find strength, I hope Facing Out gives you some energy to trust yourself, to tune into what you know to be real.
Who am I? I am the one facing the world, presenting an image of myself. And I am also the one living inside - quietly, fiercely, honestly.
